Confined Space

The Permit-Required Confined Space Inventory lists all identified permit-required confined spaces (as defined by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146) located on UMD property.

UMD employees who need to enter one of these spaces must follow the entry procedure outlined in the UMD Confined Space Plan and utilize a UMD Confined Space Entry Permit.

Non-UMD employees must follow a permit entry procedure in compliance with the OSHA Permit-Required Confined Spaces Standard (29 CFR 1910.146).

Entry

Any entry into a Permit-Required Confined Space must be registered with the Office of Facilities Management Customer Response Center at (301) 405-2222. The center is open 24 hours a day. The following information must be provided:

  1. time, date, location and purpose of entry
  2. entry supervisor's name and a means of contacting the supervisor during the entry if necessary.

A copy of All completed entry permits must be mailed or delivered to ESSR, Seneca Building #812; 4716 Pontiac Street, Suite 0103; College Park, MD 20742 after the permit is closed.

Permit-Required Confined Space Inventory

If you discover a space that meets the OSHA definition of a Permit-Required Confined Space but is not listed on this inventory please complete a Confined-Space survey form and forward the completed form to ESSR.
