Autoclaves are the most dependable systems available for the decontamination of laboratory waste and the sterilization of laboratory glassware, media, and reagents. However because they use pressurized steam, autoclaves also present a burn hazard to users. Please review the following information on protecting themselves from burns, proper use, and the requirements for installation of new autoclaves or relocation of existing ones.

Registration Information and Forms
The University of Maryland’s Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) uses SciShield (formerly BioRAFT), a management system for protocols submitted to the IBC. New protocols and amendments are processed within the SciShield system. If you have any issues with SciShield and need help please feel free to contact biosafety@umd.edu with "SciShield Questions" in the Subject line. Registration is required for research involving:
For Severe Injuries
- Call 911 for assistance and transportation to the nearest emergency room.
- Accompany the injured person to the medical facility and provide information to personnel about the accident/exposure.
- Report accident to the PI and Biosafety Officer.
- Fill out a First Report of Injury Form.
For Splash to the Eye
- Immediately flush the eye with a gentle stream of clean, temperate water for 15 minutes.
