Notice of Cases of Body Lice

Home Notice of Cases of Body Lice

The University of Maryland’s Pest Control Management Units have inspected and thoroughly treated the campus locations where body lice were reported. Inspections are continuing to ensure that no additional areas are affected.

If you see a problem on campus, please submit a request through the Facilities Service Central portal. If you are experiencing symptoms, contact the University Health Center.

All known areas have been inspected and treated.

What are Body Lice?

  • Body lice are tiny, visible insects that can live on people's skin and clothes.
  • Body lice are typically spread through direct contact with individuals who have them. They can sometimes spread  through contact with clothing, beds, or linens that have been in contact with a person with lice.
  • Symptoms include itching, rash and bites.

How to Prevent the Spread of Lice

  • Do not share clothing, beds, bedding or towels used by a person with lice.
  • Bathe regularly and change into machine-washed clothes at least once a week.
  • Machine wash and dry infested clothing and bedding using the hot water (at least 130 degrees F) laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle.
  • Dry clean clothing and items that are not washable, or seal them in a plastic bag and store for two weeks.

How to Treat Lice

  • Wash clothes, bedding and towels in hot water. Dry them on the hottest setting.
  • Bathe regularly and change and wash your clothes at least once a week.
  • Vacuum your carpets and furniture.
  • Place items that cannot be washed into a sealed plastic bag for two weeks.
