Background

Early microbiologists had to rely on open flames to ensure sterility while engaging in certain techniques. With the advancement of modern technology, including the introduction of the biosafety cabinet, the use of an open flame is almost always no longer necessary. Sudden Cardiac Arrest strikes over 300,000 people in the United States each year. These attacks can happen to anyone at any time with virtually no notice or immediately after the onset of symptoms. The survival rate for these attacks outside of a medical facility is between 1% and 5%. Studies have shown that with immediate defibrillation up to 60% survival rate one year after sudden cardiac arrest. Outside of a medical facility this can be accomplished by using an Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) unit in conjunction with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Medical Benefits

  • Injured employees are entitled to medical care related to the injury, appropriate, reasonable, and necessary. Precertification (authorization) by IWIF is required for extensive physical therapy, non-emergency diagnostic testing, surgery, pain management, and other non-standard care and procedures.
  • If the injured employee receives a medical bill requesting insurance information, promptly provide the biller with IWIF’s name, claim number, and address.
  • Medical providers can send medical bills directly to IWIF at P.O.

UMD ESSR’s Machine Shop Safety program is intended to provide those who work in those shops the
means for identifying and controlling hazardous tasks and danger zones as well as the safeguards,
equipment, and work practices for reducing those risks.

Potential hazards and examples that may be found in machine shops include the following:

The Occupational Safety & Health unit of Plan Review provides technical assistance in the identification and abatement of hazardous materials in existing structures as part of project planning and design. Common hazards anticipated may include asbestos, lead-based paint, mold, mercury containing equipment, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
