The University of Maryland has established updated sustainability goals for 2026–2036, reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship, innovation, and a more sustainable campus.
Since becoming a charter signatory of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment in 2007, UMD has advanced sustainability through strategic planning, climate action initiatives, sustainable design guidelines, and responsible resource management.
Established in 2009, the University Sustainability Council plays a key role in guiding these efforts. In 2014, the Council developed six goals focused on carbon neutrality, sustainability education, local and global impact, smart growth, water conservation, and waste reduction.
During 2025–2026, the Council reviewed and updated these goals to reflect evolving university priorities, regulatory requirements, and emerging practices in technology, research, and education.
The updated goals will help guide UMD's sustainability efforts over the next decade, emphasizing collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement across campus.
